Push-off from Tycho went smoothly. All outboard fuel containers are filled, with an expected profit of 2.366 million apiece if the delivery is made by 2392.120. Jonathan is still recovering after the airlock blew, but he’s capable of eating and walking short distances on his own again.

On our way back from Phoebe, we bade farewell to Bells and jettisoned her into Jupiter, per her last request. Jonathan didn’t seem to show much emotion, but I’m not one to judge others’ grieving methods. When we arrive at Triton, after offloading our fuel, we’ll be picking up a new Chief Engineer. Mickey speaks highly of him, and that’s good enough for me.

This will be my first time out past Uranus. Can’t say it doesn’t give me the creeps—over 2 billion miles from the sun, with hard vacuum behind every wall. The Amon is cramped enough with its 23-foot diameter; each cabin barely fits your wingspan. Just thinking about it sends a shiver down my neck. But the pay is good enough to make it worth dealing with.

We’re coming into the outer areas of the belt and should be able to engage autopilot for the next month or two. Minor reactor fluctuations have been reported by Mickey, but she assures me there’s no cause for alarm. She notes a 1–5% fluctuation in efficiency readings, so we might be cutting it close with fuel.

Murtry tells me Jonathan should be in good enough condition to fly the ship manually if needed. I’m glad to have our helmsman back, though something seems different about Jon. His humor is still dry, and he still refuses to eat while sitting, but it feels forced—like he’s just going through the motions. I’ll leave it for now and see if anything changes.

Jonathan officially has Murtry worried. He claims he overheard Jonathan talking to someone when Jonathan left his cabin door open. It’s worth noting Murtry has never been fond of Jonathan, but I think his concern is genuine this time. When I confronted Jonathan, he got agitated and told me he’d been recording an audio journal, as per my suggestion.

Aside from Jonathan, the ride has been smooth. I’m surprised we haven’t run into one of those skinny patrols. Usually, the BTB has cruisers patrolling the area between the belt and Jupiter, but I guess we’ve been lucky so far.

I’m starting to feel it already—the walls closing in. Normally, cabin fever doesn’t set in for another week or two, but it’s hitting early. I hate it. I need to get my act together. We’ve got a big contract riding on this. I’ll manage.

Translation: Is it just me, or is everyone else ignoring what’s going on with Jonathan? I know Murtry went to the Captain, but I don’t think I can stay silent anymore. Jonathan gets up at all hours and walks around aimlessly. I got curious and pulled up the cam relays from last night—he just stood in front of the reactor for five hours. Staring. Talking to himself.

Edit: You’ve got to be kidding me. I went to the Captain and showed him the footage. He told me, “There’s nothing wrong with somnambulism,” but that’s not sleepwalking. My mother used to sleepwalk, and this is nothing like that. I don’t know what it is, but it’s creeping me out. After this, I’m requesting a transfer. Put me on a water hauler. Hell, I’d take a station on a prison barge. Just get me off this ship.

Journal of Mechanic Michelle (Mickey) D. Warpol

Date: 2392.78, 3:32 AM SST (One Week Before Incident)

I’ve reported this through all official channels. He tried to kill me. That crazy little [redacted]. I’ve never had a problem with him before. And now?

I was heading to engineering to recheck those fuel variations, making sure they hadn’t gotten worse. When I passed through the storage bay, Jonathan was rummaging through tools. He said he needed a crowbar to detach a panel for some repairs and asked me to come with him. He showed me the panel and claimed there was a faulty wiring harness for the environmental systems on the ops deck

When I removed the panel, there was nothing wrong. Then I felt a hard crack on the back of my neck. I fell, and he kept hitting me. I guess I was screaming because Murtry and Wence came and tackled him.

When I came to, I was in med bay. He’s in the brig now. If it were up to me, he’d already be out the airlock, but Arny doesn’t like spacing crew. Wence is watching him for now. He, Arny, and Murtry are taking shifts. Arny says Jonathan isn’t to be harmed and will be handed over to security forces on Triton.

Journal of Captain Arnoult C. Ghenimet

Date: 2392.85, 1:15 AM SUT (Two Minutes Before Incident)

He’s been in that cell for a week now. All he does is stand there. He refuses to eat and only drinks coffee. I don’t think he’s slept. I used to think he was a fine shipmate and a decent XO. He knew how to get things done. And now? Why did you do this, Jona—

Post-Incident Note

During this journal entry, Jonathan Gottfried managed to rewire the airlock safety mechanism, causing it to open. He proceeded to brutally beat Captain Ghenimet to death before stealing a utility knife and dispatching the rest of the crew.
